‘On My Own Doorstep’ is a socially engaged art project based in Argyll, led by Joni Brown, in collaboration with Derek Prescott and in conversation with the community members of Loch Goil. It took two years to complete, starting in September 2021 and finishing in May 2023 and is in dedication to memory, identity, and place.
Following from the success of the Loch Goil’s Past and Present Exhibition held in 2021, Joni developed ‘On My Own Doorstep’ as part of a Master’s programme in Art and Social Practice with University Highlands and Islands.
This project aims to delve a little deeper into present-day circumstances of village life. It presents a snapshot in time, showcasing members of the Loch Goil community as it is now. The artist poses questions about rural life, asking what aspects are considered more rewarding compared to those that are challenging. She reflects on how our collective values might unite us when thinking about the future of our home.
Joni has created digital publication of the project which you can view as an online Flipbook. She endeavours to offer the reader an insight into the identity and memory of a place whilst engendering a sense of cohesion and collective empowerment for the people involved in the process.
